Everyone's very bright and hardworking, but everyone knows this already.
More important, the Google culture is one of openness. Many docs are publicly visible, so you can learn about other projects in the company, and people enjoy talking about what they're working on.
This varies significantly by location, but some workspaces are very tightly crammed, with people sitting side-by-side at long tables. This is a distracting and unpleasant work environment. It's like being in an industrial chicken coop. Engineers need quiet!
