It's really hard to understand what you're signing up for. Your project might be entirely different by the time you come to the internship.
On my first internship, I was lucky to be part of a project that I was interested in. The second one was not so lucky; I was mainly fixing bugs and refactoring because there was not much else to do on that project.
Ask future mentors for more detailed descriptions of intern projects.
