Software Engineer Interview Experience - San Francisco, California

Process

I applied via their website and was contacted shortly after for a phone screen. The phone screen consisted of about an hour of basic questions, and I was brought for an in-person interview afterward. This consisted of 5 or 6 one-hour sessions.

Overall, the interview process was a negative experience compared to most companies I've interviewed at. My first interviewer spent more time texting than paying attention to anything I was saying. I'd understand that if it was already decided that I was not a candidate, though that would still be rude. Given that it was the first interview, I can't imagine that was the case.

There was also an employee shadowing during an interview who asked a lot of questions that implied he didn't understand the question the other employee was asking me before coming in to shadow. We spent a lot of time explaining the problem to him, which left insufficient time to complete the solution.

Also, be cautious if Groupon flies you in for an interview. It has been over two months, and I have followed up several times. They keep stating that their reimbursement process is having "technical issues." Given the negatives I've heard from merchants about Groupon being slow to pay them, I do not believe I will actually get reimbursed for the travel expenses.
