The process began with an offer through Hired.com, followed by a phone interview with a pleasant interviewer. He inquired about my experience and asked relevant technical questions to assess my understanding of the Angular framework. This initial stage went well.
A few days later, I was invited for an in-person interview.
This is where the experience took a negative turn.
Similar to other candidates, I was placed in an empty room and left alone for fifteen minutes.
Subsequently, two individuals entered and posed a single question: "What is your experience with X?" After a brief response without any commentary, they simply said "OK" and launched into a rather challenging technical interview.
They asked me to implement Conway's Game of Life from a skeleton of code. This is a complex task, even for those familiar with it. Attempting to figure it out with two individuals observing, looking over my shoulder, and pointing out mistakes is far from ideal, especially given their robotic and unsociable demeanor.
I managed to complete most of the implementation but got stuck on one point. It was clear that I wouldn't overcome it in that environment, and it was equally apparent that this single issue was enough to derail the interview. I had already lost interest due to their overwhelmingly negative impression. The job was not a necessity.
Furthermore, they had not booked a room for the entire interview. In the midst of implementing the Game of Life, someone knocked and entered the room asking for it. However, as everyone knows, distractions like that should not affect a GOOD engineer.
In summary, the interview featured mechanical interviewers and inconsiderate treatment. My value was judged solely on one poorly structured and evaluated technical exercise, with no actual conversation about my experience, strengths, or interests.
