Pros

People on the ground are still generally aligned quite strongly with the HashiCorp principles. Pay transparency amongst employees in an internal Slack channel. Remote work allows great flexibility. Base salary is usually good for the UK as a whole compared to other tech companies (but not compared to the US market). Interesting technology/products, even if at a high level. Used to have/still does have gravitas as a company name to have worked for. RSU scheme - although you MUST negotiate these as high as possible (along with salary) when joining, as it's very difficult to 'fix' after you join and see what others were given (due to pay transparency mentioned earlier).

Cons
  • Poor pension package (legal minimum in UK)
  • Average holidays
  • Prospects of promotion are heavily tied to what it 'appears' you're doing, how much noise you make, or who you know.
  • It seems like the early years of HashiCorp have meant that senior roles are all 'taken' now, so L4 (Senior Engineer II) could be seen as a terminal level in your career.
  • Wildly differing levels across teams for skill/experience.
  • US employees are valued above everywhere else in this global organization.
  • US-centric work means it's difficult to be 'visible' at times during US hours (e.g., PST).
  • Uncertain product direction across the board.
  • Unfortunately, the long-term health of the codebase for many products is questionable.
  • Lots of management at all levels don't seem very good at management or leadership.
  • Good product management is still lacking.
  • Some skilled engineers, but craft and quality are not favored over "just f‎ JFDI' (Just Do It) and to look good (for promotion).
Advice to Management
  • Listen to your employees!
  • Focus on quality.
  • Focus on our founding principles.
  • Stop the mental gymnastics and gaslighting when the company got something wrong.
  • Stop stuffing the C-suite and upper middle management with people and rewarding them in an unbalanced way (mainly RSUs) over the value producers of this company.
  • Bring back Mitchell H.
