Pros

Telecommute for some days of the week (no longer an option).

Great work-life balance (fast disappearing in most groups).

Cons

Salaries are below market.

Stingy pay raises and bonuses.

New HR policy is removing the telecommute option (some groups want 100% onsite, not just 75%) to increase collaboration, without considering that some (not all) employees can be most productive at home, without wasting time in traffic and contending with workplace distractions (especially since no one has private cubicles anymore).

Performance rankings are now compressed from 5 bands to 3, which will promote even more mediocrity by categorizing the majority of employees into the "meets expectations" category. If you want to "exceed expectations", you had better pick a role that lends itself to positively contributing a broad impact beyond your own team, as that is the definition with which you will be ranked on.

As an engineer, working hard to increase the quality of the product or developing tools used within your own team is insufficient, unless your contributions have a broad impact across organizations. Unless your role already involves work that impacts other organizations (e.g., DevOps), it makes it imperative to develop the marketing savvy to promote your tools to receive upper management endorsement and receive a favorable performance ranking -- regardless if the tool is suited for other teams.

You can be twice as productive as your colleague but still be ranked the same, because the impact of your contributions was not felt beyond your own team. You are working hard but not working smart. Your salary and bonus will fall behind the new hires who are being paid the market rate.

Advice to Management

Push back against these unpopular HR policies that will inevitably increase employee attrition.
