Pros

Well, as far as the IT/software department in Australia is concerned, it's nothing other than the brand name. Please don't join this place if you have any other option.

Cons

This review is specific to the IT department of HSBC Australia. I worked there for almost a year, and that too because it was my first job in Australia. I would have given a negative rating if possible, but unfortunately, Glassdoor doesn't allow that.

It is really difficult to put all the cons here because that's all there is in the software development/IT division.

  1. Huge disconnect between business and IT; business treats developers as slaves.
  2. Filled with incompetent and helicopter managers (these are people who hover above your head all the time, asking for updates and seeing what you are doing, e.g., when you are coming in, what time you are going, how many breaks you are taking, etc.). These managers have been with the organization for many years and don't know anything else other than micromanaging.
  3. Too much open nepotism, and it's openly celebrated. For example, if someone who has a big mouth and is a bootlicker will easily get into the good books of management or business. So, if someone in the above category gives an update in stand-up days after days, "I don't know what I did yesterday," "today I am not sure what I am supposed to do," it is perfectly acceptable, and no one questions it. But if you don't fall into that category, where you would be asked to update what you did on an hour-by-hour basis, it happened to one of my friends there, not with me.
Advice to Management

Please keep on doing whatever you are, because you are already winning on the wrong side, and this will ensure that you keep winning on that side.

All the best.
