Senior iOS Engineer Interview Experience

Process

This test was unprofessional and somewhat immature.

The Grocery Challenge iOS project is uploaded on HackerRank.

First, download the project and read the instructions on the long page.

Start Xcode and understand the provided classes.

You will likely spend 15-20 minutes on this step alone, unless you are familiar with the test and have solved it previously. If you have, you can solve it again. Otherwise, the company will deem you unfit for iOS development.

Questions

You will get a shock and surprise. The Grocery Challenge project they have created, expecting the developer to fill in blanks with production-level code in just 30 minutes, is crazy. Dropping UI elements on a storyboard with Auto Layout alone takes about 10-15 minutes. In the remaining 15 minutes, what can a developer realistically write? Consider if you need to write protocols, a separate data source class, invoke a network API, and create a collection view cell class to bind data received from the network API.

They want you to create a screen with a Question label at the top, followed by four grid images below it, and a Submit button at the bottom.

Data for the Question label and image URLs comes from the server. Therefore, you have to invoke a network API to get the first Question object, which contains an array of Answer objects. Each Answer object has a field for imageURL.

Once you get the Question object, use the answer array to load the images. The Answer object also has a correct: Bool field that indicates whether this image is the correct answer for that Question label.

Even if you use features like IBOutletCollections, 15 minutes are not nearly enough to complete what is asked.

This seems very immature. Instacart does not appear to be paying attention to this. Either you should know this Grocery Challenge solution before the test even starts, then you will be good.
