Process

As an out-of-state applicant, I underwent an hour-long phone screen with the Test Engineer. The questions were technical and primarily related to the lab and products I would be working with. Some questions were overly difficult and unrelated, serving two purposes:

  1. To see if I would embellish my experience (they wanted me to admit when I didn't know things).
  2. To assess my ability to work out answers with guidance and provided information.

After passing the phone screen, I met with the hiring manager, lead technician, one engineer, and two junior technicians with different specialties.

  • The manager asked for details about my work history.
  • The lead technician asked personality questions.
  • The engineer posed very technical questions.
  • The two technicians asked operational questions about best practices for data collection, test setup, and my experience in specific skill sets.

Questions

The most difficult question I had was from the Test Engineer over the phone. He knew I had taken a good bit of chemistry and physics, and that one of my hobbies was learning about the cosmos. So, he asked me to generally explain the basic process of nuclear fission as it related to a star. Obviously, nothing related to computers.
