Pros

Very talented people and interesting projects. Find a good group and project, and there are great opportunities to make an impact.

Cons

It all depends on who you are working for. If you get a "bad boss," it can be a nightmare, and unfortunately, it's getting harder to avoid. The current crop of mid-to-upper level managers, around 50-55 years old, has far more lemons than those in the same positions 10-15 years ago. If you're in a bad situation, you need to move quickly, and that's also harder to do.

Advice to Management

Assess your mid-to-upper level managers for competence, innovation, and people skills, especially people skills.
