Student position as Product Development Engineer

Product Development Engineer

Pros

As an undergraduate electrical engineering student, the hours were very flexible, and I was even able to work from home. I was required to work at least 20 hours a week; however, due to the aforementioned flexibility, I could work 25-30 per week without much impact on my studies. The team I was working with was very friendly and, at first, offered a lot in terms of career mentorship and guidance.

Cons

Over the year, unfortunately, the "on-site perks" were gradually reduced to a minimum. For example, the pool table was removed, the cubicles were made a bit smaller, and the rest areas were also removed.

Towards the end of my employment there, I felt like I was doing such a small part that it had almost zero impact on the overall product my team delivers.

Advice to Management

The only major advice would be for more prospective students: give them more responsibility and give them tasks that can be suited for full-time engineers.
