I work at Intel because it enables me to do what I love: take on some of the toughest challenges in the world. Every problem I work on is huge. Small decisions that I make can make huge differences in the happiness and productivity of hundreds of thousands of employees. There are few places that allow this sort of impact. I am excited to go to work every day. Sure, there are the normal challenges, but my actual work—I love it.
If you have the wrong manager, your life will be miserable. If you are unhappy with your manager, find a new one as soon as possible.
The meeting culture at Intel can be very difficult to work in. There are meetings for everything. I have had jobs where over 75% of my time has been in meetings. I wrote code on the weekend just to get my fix.
The jobs in the bureaucracy that require lots of meetings pay well, but they are really boring if you are a person who likes to be a hands-on keyboard software engineer.
Rebuild team Intel.
We don't have any company events anymore. This isn't just a COVID thing; we haven't had any company-wide or site-wide events where employees can have fun together in years.
Note the 50th anniversary celebration; it shows how bad we are at celebrating. We need to be more connected as a community.
Let's have a huge celebration when we deliver. Let's bring in everyone's families. They had to pay a price for that success: late-night meetings, weekends, etc. Folks' families pay for that. They should be included in the celebration.
