Pros

Had to think very hard to write Pros.

  • A few talented people to work with
  • Decent pay
  • Access to good resources.
Cons

Don't have to think too much.

Based on my experience in the "we used to be the bread and butter of Intel, we are the number one" team of Intel.

  • No job security. Be ready to be chopped off before you know it.
  • Chances of having to put up with a bad manager are very high. 8 out of 10 are bad managers. Calculate the probability that one ends up with a bad manager.
  • Immediate managers micromanage.
  • Immediate managers have lost their touch with technical aspects and are only spreadsheet experts. Try explaining to such people technical things and get them to agree.
  • No career growth since the team itself has become stagnant and has lost its reputation with poor performance in the recent projects. Still a lot of churn in the team.
  • Promotions are given to people who are loud-mouthed again because immediate managers are not technical. So the loudest seller in the bazaar wins the customer (i.e., promotion).
  • Frequent change in direction/goal for the team. The team is basically trying to survive rather than to grow for the past 3 years.
  • Too many wrappers around industry standard tools that make it difficult to troubleshoot. The wrappers don't have documentation and sometimes, the so-called "experts" also can't understand.
  • Late in adoption of the latest industry standards, so skills are sort of irrelevant outside Intel.
  • Politics in promoting. Wait in queue for your turn to get promoted, though we follow meritocracy.
  • Lots of unwritten rules that contradict Intel's guidelines.
  • Very little scope to try out a different area as managers tend to not allow it. Only a handful of good managers encourage it.
Advice to Management

Cannot advise a management that doesn't want to listen to advice. But, at least now reinstate the Manager Feedback Tool and Org Health Survey.

Act (not ACT) on the results.

Make sure immediate managers that assign work to people work on something technical. Stop following stale methods of management.
