I was referred for this opening by a friend. A senior engineer on the team contacted me and set up a phone interview that lasted about half an hour. The conversation was mostly focused on previous project experience and the technologies used in those projects. The interviewer asked questions regarding differences between switching and routing, layer 2 switching, layer 3 switching, VLANs, etc.
We went into more detail on VLANs: fields in the VLAN header, function of each field, the number of VLANs that can be supported, etc. They also asked questions about SIP and H.323 and the comparison between the two.
What are VLANs used for?
Describe the VLAN header.
What is the size of the header?
What are the fields in the VLAN header?
What are the functions and size of each field?
What is the maximum number of VLANs supported?
