Machine Learning Engineer Interview Experience - New York, New York

Process

The interview process began with a phone screen, followed by an onsite interview. Recruiters were responsive and friendly.

The phone screen consisted of one coding question and a lengthy discussion about my experience.

The onsite interview comprised six modules:

  • Two coding rounds.
  • A lunch talk with an engineer.
  • A discussion about experience with a hiring manager (not necessarily the one hiring).
  • A round with an open-ended discussion about a practical ML problem.
  • Another round focused on theory trivia, which was quite challenging due to insufficient preparation and the need to prove theorems on the spot.
  • An additional ML design problem.

Interestingly, contrary to what the recruiters seemed to imply, I was not tested on any practical Pandas, R, NumPy, or Spark knowledge.

Although I applied for a senior-level role, the questions were surprisingly textbook. I was informed that I was close, but an offer was not extended.
