Software Engineer Interview Experience - San Francisco, California

Process

Recruiter phone screen (~20 minutes), followed by a technical phone screen (45 minutes).

The technical phone screen (TPS) began with introductions. The interviewer took a long time (7 minutes) for his intro, while I sped mine up (2 minutes) because I knew the time allotted for the TPS was limited. He continued to ask some preliminary introduction questions. Twenty minutes in, he finally mentioned getting into CoderPad. The recruiter gave me the wrong link, so the interviewer had to email it. The code problem was UI-related, not terribly difficult, but definitely requires more than 25 minutes for someone unfamiliar with or who has forgotten some of the DOM API.

I finished with 5 minutes to spare and asked questions. It became very obvious that I was on the phone with a junior engineer; he hesitated on answering a lot of questions. Regarding the problem he presented on CoderPad, he replied, saying he doesn't know why they ask this question because "it's really hard," then retracted by saying, "Maybe I shouldn't say that while I'm interviewing you."

I didn't get past the TPS, but I imagine an on-site interview would have followed. I knew that if I were being graded on problem-solving in an efficient manner, I would have moved forward, but I didn't. It was obviously ageism. I ended up receiving offers from Uber, Google, Netflix, and Facebook. Lyft was initially my top choice, but now I don't even use the Lyft app anymore.
