Process

The interview process started with a call from the Hiring Manager. He began by giving an introduction about the company and the job description. It is mainly an application support job for the first two years. Later on, we can switch over to a department of our choice. He asked a few behavioral questions and about academic projects.

Then, questions were based on soft skills:

  • What conflicts did you encounter when working with the previous company?
  • How did you handle multitasking?

He then scheduled a technical interview for 10 days later, where we had to choose one subject: Control Engineering, DSP, or Embedded. I chose DSP.

I also chose C as my programming language (among C/C++/Java) and Linear Algebra, Calculus, and MATLAB for my math/tool subjects.

After ten days, as scheduled, I received the call for the technical interview. I had read reviews on Glassdoor, which were very helpful.

The interviewer started with questions on Signals, involving convolution, LTI, memoryless, linear, and causality. Questions were also asked on Z-transforms, ROCs, Fourier Series, Fourier Transforms, FIR, and IIR filters. This section lasted for almost 20 minutes.

Then, she moved to mathematics:

  • Eigenvalues and eigenvectors
  • Differentiation and integration
  • L'Hôpital's rule
  • Definite and indefinite integrals
  • Applications of differentiation and integration
  • Different types of matrices (singular, identity, symmetric, etc.)
  • Dot product and cross product

The programming part was pretty easy:

  • Difference between i++ and ++i
  • Static, global, and local variables
  • What is a pointer?
  • Void and null pointers
  • Basic array questions
  • #define and typedef

I felt they might ask the same set of questions for everyone.

Finally, at the end, she started with questions on MATLAB:

  • Difference between a*b and a.*b
  • Dot product and cross product in MATLAB
  • Difference between function and scripts
  • MEX functions
  • Workspace
  • Current directory
  • Cell arrays
  • Transpose
  • Determinant
  • Data types in MATLAB

I answered about 80% of the questions correctly and felt very confident throughout the interview. If you don't know the answer, at least try explaining your logic. I think the cutoff is very high, so try to be crisp and clear with the answers you know.

After seeing the career link, I found out that "Match not ideal at this time." But the interview was really refreshing, and I got a chance to brush up on my basics.
