Process
I applied online on the MathWorks careers website and was contacted by email to schedule a telephonic interview. The interviewer called me 15 minutes late.
All the questions were standard control systems, MATLAB programming, and C++ programming questions. Some of them included:
- Stability regions of continuous and discrete systems
- Giving the control canonical form from a transfer function
- Meaning of the following in MATLAB: @, A.', A'
- Difference between a script and a function
- Scope of variables in a script and a function
- Constructors and derived classes in C++
- Default private/public in a class and struct
- Default methods of a class
- What is OOP, encapsulation, function overriding, etc.
Questions

Pros: Tons of flexibility for what projects you want to work on.
Standard work hours: 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM.
Good starting vacation time.
Friendly and accessible management.
Resources and training are very available.
Responsive and informative throughout the interview process.
Remote work during COVID.
Beautiful campus and good cafeteria onsite.
Good culture.
Cons: Difficult interview content.
Located in the northeast.
Not a lot of availability to transfer to other locations across the US.

Pros: Nice facility, good health benefits, profit dividends instead of stock options (private company).
Cons: The hierarchy of the company allows for the network of managers to protect each other and perpetuate a toxic culture. There's a big focus on process for many parts of the company, but not in terms of recourse for managers abusing their power.
They are very against remote work and resisted it through COVID.

Too much micromanagement in EDG

Pros: Modern workplace, with nice facilities including a gym and offices.
Free breakfast on Wednesdays.
Cons: Poor management at EDG. The managers tend to micromanage people and create a kindergarten-like atmosphere. EDG is a ruse for them to get technical support done by highly qualified people, and their values have diverged from the company's core values.
Work/life balance is screwed up since you frequently have to work 12-hour days, and the hard work you put in is not appreciated but rather seen as standard expectations.
None of the managers have technical skills, so they frequently try to evade questions by asking the same questions back to people. "What do you think?" is the most commonly used phrase here, and there is never any logical explanation for anything.
