Applications Support Engineer Interview Experience

Process

To work in this position, you need to know and have used MATLAB for some period of time.

The technical phone screening had three sections:

  1. Programming language of your choice.
  2. Real-Time OS concepts.
  3. Basic MATLAB questions (yes, basic, perhaps a little too basic).

Java was my preferred language. The questions were fairly straightforward, such as:

  • Explain Classpath in Java.
  • Explain the Garbage Collector mechanism.
  • Explain the difference between == and .equals(), and when each should be used.
  • Describe a situation where the finally block will not be executed in exception handling (Answer: System.exit()).

Some other simple questions were also discussed.

Real-Time OS:

  • Priority Inversion: Definition, example, and how to avoid it.
  • Deadlock.
  • Difference between RTOS and OS.

There were some more basic questions as well.

MATLAB:

I was not able to answer most of the questions, as I rarely use MATLAB beyond drawing plots and graphs. However, most of them were basic.

Duration: 45 minutes.
