Process
The whole process took quite a while for me (mid-July - September), but it was such a great learning experience.
It involved the typical interview stages:
- A phone screen
- A technical interview via webcam
- An on-site interview with whiteboarding questions and other assessments.
Everyone I spoke with was very kind and accommodating to all my questions.
They showed me that they value an employee's potential and work ethic over someone who can merely get the right answers all the time.
I enjoyed meeting everyone, and the interviews weren't as nerve-wracking as I had anticipated.

Pros: Good benefits.
Reasonable work hours.
Great team/people around you.
Cons: - Layoffs really killed the vibe of the studio.
- I imagine the 'great team / people around you' pro might change in the near future.
- They overinvest in things that clearly will not work, which, in my opinion, caused the layoffs.

Pros: Management seems to care very much about your well-being and feelings. They've made it their mission to ensure people feel heard and that the company mission and direction are expressed openly and honestly each week.
Throughout the Covid situation, Niantic has been extremely accommodating in the work-from-home environment.
Niantic is a proactive tech company trying to lead the world in AR. They're also a game studio. Yet Niantic seems to handle this clash of two different cultures well. There is a firm belief in no-crunch. Health insurance coverage is great.
Cons: The LA office is not the best physical office and not in the best location.
Compensation could be a bit higher as well.
Hours for the LA office tend to start a little later than normal and therefore end a little later in the day than I desire.

Pros: - Not much politics, at least at the engineering level.
- Treated employees well.
- Good work-life balance.
- Quite unique culture (in a good way) due to strong emphasis on players and live events.
- Have chances to travel to live events worldwide if you work in relevant teams.
Cons: - Business is stable but doesn't have strong growth.
- Some of the technology might be old.
