Software Engineer New Grad Interview Experience - Palo Alto, California

Process

A coding challenge was sent via email (easy difficulty).

After that, a recruiter scheduled a phone call to find out more about my background.

The phone interview was scheduled for the week after and included two algorithms questions (one easy difficulty, one medium difficulty). The call lasted about 45 minutes.

An onsite visit was scheduled for a couple of weeks later, with three interviews.

  • One algorithms interview
  • One interview focused on solving problems in an existing codebase
  • One design/personality interview

There was no interview with a manager. Each interview had someone shadowing.

The company also provided an hour-long introduction about their products before the interviews. Lunch followed the interviews, and then a product showcase. Since a non-disclosure agreement is required, they went into detail about their products.

The engineers here are highly judgmental. They were satisfied with all my problem-solving skills (I even finished some problems earlier than expected), but some were unenthusiastic about it. They didn't show any interest when I mentioned knowing about some of the tools the company has made. Every person I met working there said they chose the company because "they solve real-world problems" (literally the same answer from each person).

The interior design of the HQ office is a bit depressing, feeling more like a law firm than a tech company.

Some of the applications the company has created are impressive, but they are built with older technology. Their reasoning is that the government, their biggest client, takes a while to trust newer software.

Questions

Create a KD Tree.

Given an existing codebase in Java, fix certain bugs. One bug was incorrect logic, and another was an optimization for speed. The interviewer might also plant secret bugs in the code without mentioning them to see if they will be picked up.

Explain how you would go about designing a mobile app that helps a user know how dangerous an animal is. Consider real-life scenarios, such as no Wi-Fi accessibility.

Tell something about yourself that's not on your resume.

What is one thing you don't like in Software Engineering? Be specific and explain why.
