Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience - Santa Clara, California

Neutral ExperienceNo Offer

Process

The process takes over 3 weeks.

It includes:

  • One phone interview with HR.
  • One technical phone interview with one employee.

One week later, an on-site interview with four engineers, 45 minutes each.

Questions

The interview covered previous work experience, Python, SQL, and some algorithm questions.

The first interviewer was a little arrogant, though technically competent. At least he stated his questions clearly, wrote them down, and provided examples.

The second interviewer did not provide all the required information clearly. For example, one question involved storing 1 million integer numbers efficiently, a problem similar to one used by Google. The original question stated the range of numbers was less than 4 million and RAM was 1 million. However, the interviewer said the range was "int_max." This change caused the memory space required by the bit map solution to increase 1,000 times. How could I resolve it?

Another interviewer questioned my ability to work independently from the very beginning, stating that a senior software engineer should be able to work independently. He asked if I could work independently and if I had such experience. I already have ten years of work experience, and most of the companies I worked for were larger than this company. I did not know how to answer this question; whatever I said felt inadequate.

Then, he asked some questions about bugs he had encountered. I did not understand the background and therefore said no. Besides, he asked some questions orally without providing examples. My solutions inevitably had problems because I did not know the structure of the database tables.
