I can't say much about the software side since I was in hardware, but as an intern in the hardware team, there wasn't much to learn. All the engineers are mostly at the senior level and have not had many ideas about the tasks which could be given to an intern.
It mostly requires years of experience to work in this team. If not, you're gonna struggle to understand, and there's no recently joined employee who could guide you in debugging tool issues, etc. This is not the main job that you work on; instead, it's a waste of hours of time on debugging tool/server issues.
