Software Developer • Current Employee
Pros: - Work is pretty easy. They give you the tools you need to do your job, and most of the code is relatively new, so there's not a lot of digging through legacy stuff.
- Low expectations. I have had some weeks in the past where I was just not really feeling it and accomplished practically nothing, and nobody said a word. Nor have those weeks affected my performance reviews as far as I can tell.
- No expectation of overtime. Never once have I been asked to work more than 40 hours per week. When I started, one complaint I saw quite a bit was that they work you hard at Paycom, but I have not found that to be the case at all. Especially with remote work, my hours have been pretty flexible, and I have never felt overworked.
- Good pay for OKC. You could definitely get better in other locations, but it's offset by the low cost of living.
- Good culture. There's a lot of effort put into showing appreciation for employees, and management typically does their best to make sure developers are happy (at least in my experience).
Cons: Work is not challenging. If you are someone who likes to challenge themselves or hopes to work on bleeding-edge technology, this is not the place for you.
There are quite a few people who do the absolute bare minimum. These people put in "40 hours" of work, but their 40 hours is probably about 10 hours' worth of work for a competent developer. This is not completely bad, since if you are any good, you will meet the minimum expectations no problem. But on the flip side, you cannot really rely on these people to be helpful or knowledgeable in any way. They also tend to write really bad code, so if you are on a team where you have to all work on the same project, you will probably end up spending half your time cleaning up their mess.
The stack is somewhat outdated by web development standards. They do the best they can with what they have, but you will spend a lot of time working with languages that you are not likely to use elsewhere.
Overall, I would say Paycom is a great place if you just want to make a good paycheck with minimum effort—at least that has been my experience so far. It may be a good stepping stone to bigger tech companies, but I do not personally know anyone who has made that transition.
