Software Engineer Interview Experience - Seattle, Washington

Process

I had a terrible interview experience.

The engineer who called me asked a bunch of soft questions:

  • Tell me a time when you checked in a huge bug. How did you fix it?
  • Tell me about a time when you went above and beyond your role.

The interviewer then asked a number of trivia questions, ranging in difficulty:

  • Explaining the difference between an interface and an abstract class.
  • Internal implementations of certain data structures.
  • How hashmap collision reduction strategies work.

Then, he left about 10 minutes for the coding question, asked the question, and then was silent while I was trying to talk through the problem and code it.

I felt very rushed, and I don't think he led the interview well at all.

Questions

Explain the internal implementation of data structures.
