Process

In the initial application step, there was a question: "Please decode the text below. Upon decoding, you will be taken to a URL with further instructions on completing the challenge." I kindly responded that I would not invest time into an unspecified challenge without having even started a dialogue with the company. They rejected my application 4 days later.

After the fact, I decoded the URL and reviewed the challenge. It was a challenge to build a Capture-The-Flag React app. Nothing too difficult, but a somewhat involved app (API calls, logic, animation, rendering delays, state management).

More than should be asked at the application stage.

While it is reasonable to ask a candidate to complete a code challenge during the interviewing process, asking them to do so at the application stage is ridiculous.

And to not be straightforward about it (i.e., asking "decode the text below") is silly and unprofessional.

If you want applicants to do a code challenge, be up front about it. Let them know what the challenge is and that you'll only consider applicants who complete the challenge. That's a much better applicant experience and allows the applicant to make a choice upfront.

This is a red flag for this company. That they would ask this of applicants at the very start of submitting an application and do so in a gamified manner speaks to a lack of courtesy, flawed strategic thinking, and an abundance of ego.
