The interview process was:

• Recruiter phone call (including a few basic technical questions)
• Technical phone screen 1 (hash map questions)
• Technical phone screen 2
• Virtual onsite (presentation on a technical challenge I faced, two data structure/algorithm sessions, system design session, and a behavioral session)

After going through all the rounds, I was told over the phone that I was going to get an offer. I was told the formal offer would come in the next few days after someone from upper management returned from vacation. Apparently, that person had to approve all the details before the formal offer letter could be sent out.

Some days later, I received an email saying I was not going to receive an offer. The reason given was that though the engineering/hiring manager wanted to bring me on, upper management was not fully convinced by my interview performance.

At this point, I asked for feedback on my interview performance, which I felt was fair after interviewing with them for a month, but heard back nothing. So, I was told they would extend an offer, then they said they would not, and I did not get any constructive feedback from them about why.

As a side note, the hiring manager had told me his biggest challenge at the moment was hiring the necessary talent because they just had so much work to do. Hearing that he wanted to hire someone but his managers vetoed that worries me that upper management is not supporting their engineers sufficiently. Having seen similar situations at other companies, I know it is probably for the best to not be somewhere with a lack of support from upper management.
