Process

Riot recruiters contacted me several times, stating that my background and experience would be a good fit for the engineering management position. After reading reviews on Glassdoor, I declined several times. However, a recruiter friend joined Riot and once again suggested I interview. He indicated that I would be a great fit and even named five teams that expressed interest.

He mentioned that for all management positions, they conduct a technical screen, and the team I selected to interview with did the technical screen first. I agreed, but explained that I had focused on management for several years and was out of practice. He suggested they would only ask questions within my technical expertise as listed on my resume. He also indicated that managers were expected to code at an "associate" level.

Instead, the technical screen was administered by two Senior Engineers who had no knowledge of me or the position I was interviewing for. The main part of the interview was a standard algorithmic challenge, similar to HackerRank. Although I could discuss the O(n) solution, I could not devise the O(log n) solution during the interview and was therefore not selected.

Riot Games can interview Engineering Managers however they please. However, it would be beneficial for recruiters to be more upfront about the interview process and avoid encouraging candidates to interview for roles they are not a fit for. Be aware that this type of technical interview is a requirement for moving forward at Riot.
