Process

I was contacted by a recruiter who found my profile on LinkedIn.

We set up an initial phone prescreen. The conversation focused on engineering processes, best practices, and growing and mentoring talent.

The prescreen was followed by a culture screen via Skype with a manager and an engineer.

The manager asked general questions about challenges at my current position, accomplishments I am proud of, and computer games I play regularly.

He also inquired about my familiarity with games developed at Riot and if I had played any.

He asked why I had chosen to apply to Riot and not Blizzard, and was visibly disappointed when I mentioned I was considering Blizzard as well.

The manager did all the talking, while the engineer observed and took notes.

The manager came across as arrogant, bragging about Riot's success and its "hip" culture.

My impression was that they are primarily interested in hiring gamers, rather than technologists.

I was amused when he acknowledged a void in technology leadership overall at Riot.
