The recruiter reached out to me, saying that I seemed to be a great fit for the job. There was a 15-minute phone screening with them, then they set up an interview with a few other engineers for a few days later. I was under the impression, given how the recruiter spoke during our screening, that this would be more of an introduction/fit that would lead into further, more technical interviews. I also never received a formal job description. Instead, I jumped on the call and was never asked about my experience, philosophies, etc. No one had questions about my work or resume. It just became rapid-fire technical "gotchas." They were even quizzing me on things not on my resume. The questions were all things I knew, but I admit I was so blindsided I completely flubbed a lot of them. Lesson learned for future interviews, I guess. I asked other senior engineers I am friends with/work with, and they agreed they would not have gotten these on the spot, and it just seemed designed to trip you up. Unsurprisingly, the recruiter called back pretty quickly and said they were moving forward with other candidates. After that interview, I would not even want to accept that job.
