Cons: On-call weeks can be a drag, involving getting alerts and being tethered to a laptop. While on-call, you may need to do 1-3 deployments per on-call week after hours. This can be 40 minutes multiple hours each.

Cons: salary, career growth, and recognition of work

Pros: Strong engineering talent, interesting technical problems, and opportunities to work across teams and systems. Individual managers and peers can be very supportive, and there is room to take on significant responsibility and visibility.

Cons: Career progression can feel unnecessarily difficult and opaque. In my experience, employees can perform above their current level, take on broader responsibilities, receive manager support for promotion, and still have promotion delayed because of calibration, changing expectations, or concerns that were not clearly communicated beforehand. The process can feel structured around finding reasons not to promote rather than defining a clear bar and rewarding employees once they meet it.
