Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

This was one of my worst interview experiences ever. I was contacted by a Salesforce Recruiter who told me some details of the project. She then proceeded to set up an interview with the hiring manager.

During the hiring manager interview, he informed me that the project details the recruiter had given me were incorrect and that my understanding was not right. He then proceeded with a technical screen. Initially, I did stumble, as I hadn't expected this to be a technical screen. However, I was able to answer all the remaining questions. I didn't really expect a callback. As expected, I received an email from the recruiter stating they were not moving forward. All good!

A couple of weeks later, the same recruiter contacted me again, saying she had floated my resume within the company and another team would like to conduct a "Live Video Coding Session." Okay, I was cool with that. I prepared for the "Live Video Coding Session." When my interviewer came online, he told me that the position had already been filled and that they did not have anything called a "Live Video Coding Session."

So, I asked him what was going on, and he said he didn't know either but proceeded with another verbal technical screening. This time, I was much better prepared and answered all the questions he posed. He said he would inform the recruiter about the next steps.

The next day, I received another email from the same recruiter saying, "We will not be moving forward." At this point, I was wondering what was going on.

Couple days later, I received another email from a different person saying, "Congratulations! You have passed the first round of screening!" I was really confused by this point. So, I emailed this new recruiter and asked him what exactly was going on.

He called me and gave me a spiel about how the interview process at his location was different and that he would personally ensure I got a chance to be in their priority system. By the time we hung up, he promised to send me the details of the Remote Programming Test!

One week went by with radio silence. At the end of the week, I emailed him again, asking if he would be sending the details for the RPT.

And lo and behold, I received yet another "We will not be moving forward" from this person too.

I am appalled at the lack of communication and professionalism from a company like Salesforce. From this entire process, I learned two things:

  • You do not give any respect to the candidate. The candidate's time and effort are worth nothing. If the position had been filled, you should have had the courtesy to inform the candidate. My time is valuable too, and I would not have had to take time off work for this charade.
  • You do not talk to each other. The constant back and forth of "No, you didn't get through the screening," "Yes, you got through to the next round" was exhausting and frankly demeaning! I wish you would make sure the position is truly available before contacting a candidate.

I am very, very disappointed in how the Salesforce recruiting team handled this whole situation. The way the last person communicated this to me was not cool. In fact, they didn't let me know until I inquired. I had hoped to get a chance to interview with Salesforce, and clearly, that didn't work out, and I am not impressed!

Questions

About 20 questions in both technical screens.

The first screening specifically included core Java questions alone.

In the second screening, there were questions on Java, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Servlets.

Example: Verbally tell me the code of a servlet that prints "Hello World".
