Senior Software Developer Interview Experience - Santa Clara, California

Process

No recruiter contact. I was contacted by the hiring manager, who set up a phone interview with a team member.

The interview was unexpectedly a video interview. It included one programming question, which was easy.

There was silence and no feedback for a week. Then, suddenly, I received an email from the manager asking for another phone interview. This time, I knew it would be a video interview. It involved a couple of programming questions again, which were not too tough.

Then, I received an email for a third phone interview. I was surprised, as I was a local candidate, and most companies invite candidates for an onsite interview after just one round of phone interviews.

The third video interview was with the hiring manager, who asked one question each in Java and JavaScript. He asked me to work on my local IDE, which made it even easier to solve.

I was then invited for an onsite round that lasted 3 hours. I spoke with 3 interviewers (the first was my phone interviewer).

All three rounds were interesting: design, JavaScript basics, design, algorithm, and UI questions.

Then, I had a brief conversation with the hiring manager, in which he asked for my current compensation.

After that, I was contacted by the hiring manager the following Monday. He said he would make me an offer and asked if I had any number in mind and for two references. I provided the references and stated that I expected ServiceNow to make a competitive offer.

On the next day, I received an email from the hiring manager stating that he wanted me to come in for another round of interviews with his manager and another teammate. When I confirmed the date for that, he sent me a homework exercise in AngularJS to complete as well.

This was the tipping point. I decided not to continue further with such an indecisive hiring process.

Questions

The hiring manager was very keen on knowing whether I was interviewing with other companies or not. When I told him truthfully, "Yes," he wanted to know the company names and then kept asking if I had received offers from them.
