Software Engineer (Internship) Interview Experience - San Mateo, California

Process

The initial recruiter Zoom call focused on "tell me about a time when" experience questions. The interviewers were pleasant.

The next, and final, interview was a 60-minute panel with three individuals: a Senior Software Engineer (SWE), a Staff SWE, and a Senior Manager of SWE. These interviewers were from the specific team you expressed interest in. Mine was for the Infrastructure team.

The interview was divided equally between behavioral and technical questions.

A notable aspect was that, despite the job location being in California, all interviewers were based in India and spoke with strong accents, which made it somewhat difficult to fully relate and understand them.

The interviewers took turns leading the questioning:

  • The Staff SWE asked about your resume, focusing on industry experience and projects. Unfortunately, they did not ask about recent experiences (within the last year). Instead, they asked about events from over a year ago and expected specific metrics, which were difficult to recall. This was particularly disappointing as your most recent experiences were highly relevant to their team.
  • The Senior SWE presented a coding problem, which felt comparable to a LeetCode Easy. A challenge was their lack of verbal feedback during the coding process. When you explained your thought process and sought their input, they responded with non-committal "mmh mmh" sounds. The problem also required manually writing a lengthy mapping, leading to extended periods of silence as you typed.
  • After the technical portion, the manager inquired about your interest in the company, specifically why ServiceNow, and then opened the floor for your questions.

There were instances where you were interrupted as someone finished speaking and you were about to follow up, though this was likely unintentional.

Overall, the experience with the second round of interviews was not ideal, though this may vary depending on the team.
