Thoroughly enjoyed working with everyone at Shopify. Their employee culture team does an extraordinary job at making employees, including themselves, believe they are part of something bigger than themselves and are crafting e-commerce history (within reason).
Terrible impact on mental health (those laid off and those not).
Layoffs aren't fun, but there are graceful ways to handle them versus thoughtless or deceitful management.
Management reported an increase in revenue and promised there wouldn't be layoffs a month prior, stating the company was doing well despite tough economic conditions.
Then, one day, you wake up with a breakup email. The content specified that the brief breakup information session happened during your time zone's 5 am, so it's too bad you missed it and only have the dumping email to look at.
Handle layoffs better.
No one blames you for having to do it, but you are absolutely responsible for genuinely helping people transition out better and should care for their mental health.
You never know when you might be cutting lives short (literally).
Give advance warnings or at least have your HR team be ready to respond, rather than simply not responding and threatening everyone with a sign-by date.
Do better.
