Career advancement will heavily depend on whether one lands on a team that is working on a shiny new feature and whether the manager cares about one's career advancement.
Many managers are not trained to lead people; they are, for the most part, software developers who got promoted due to building systems, not for their leadership aptitude.
Invest more in leadership training at all levels.
