Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

After a recruiter call, which went very smoothly and professionally, there was a hiring manager interview.

The recruiter walked me through what to expect and how to prepare for it. I was initially set to interview with a manager. However, a few hours before the interview, I was told they were switching the interviewer because the manager was unavailable.

The replacement was a developer, not a manager. Although the recruiter stated the interview would be behavioral and not technical, the interviewer expected technical aspects in every question asked. When trying to communicate behavioral aspects in my answers, I didn't feel the necessity to dive deep into technical details. There were also irrelevant technical questions, which was unexpected and surprising.

The interviewer was indirectly conducting a technical screen, not a behavioral interview. This would have been acceptable if I had been informed, but that was not the case.

They seemed unmotivated to hear any of my answers, often asking me to provide a different, more technical example because the one I shared wasn't "exciting enough." They also appeared distracted within seconds of my responses, which made me feel very uncomfortable.

Overall, the process was handled very unprofessionally, especially for a company like Slack.

I later heard from the recruiter that they were not moving forward because "the team" had decided I was not a good fit, with no feedback provided. This "team" consisted of just one developer whose total years of development experience was half of mine.
