Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience - Denver, Colorado

Process

The lady I met with for the in-person interview was friendly and seemed intelligent.

Unfortunately, it was a four-hour interview that largely seemed like a waste of time.

You'd think they'd be able to waste a bit less time with these things.

I stumbled a tiny bit during the one-hour technical interview whiteboarding session, but was able to answer all the questions fine and even tried to share some knowledge about temporary tables in SQL Server, that the interviewer, who previously worked at Microsoft, did not seem super familiar with.

Based on the feedback I received, it sounds like I largely did not get an offer due to the whiteboarding session. I think that they were looking for someone that fit the mold of a polished consultant a bit better.

Honestly, the salary range is below market and I likely would not have taken the position had I received an offer.

I also found the technical interviewer to be arrogant. He did a really poor job of leaving time for me to ask him questions as well. As did the director-level person I spoke with.

The director-level lady that I spoke with was by far the best at striking the balance between a conversation and an interview.

The technical interviewer did a really poor job of making much of a conversation out of the interview. He also seemed eager to try and showcase what he knew and did not seem very interested in listening or problem-solving together. He preferred to dictate solutions to a poorly articulated coding problem that he had presented many times before. He did a poor job of communicating the whiteboarding problems and did not give me much of a chance to iterate on the solution and point out areas for improvement on the initial prototype.

The male director-level person I spoke with asked a few personality questions, but also did a poor job of leaving time for questions and making the tone conversational. He came across as arrogant and seemed to be searching for scripted responses and familiar answers.

Questions

Write a method that returns the numbers 1-10. We then iterated on the method a bit to take in two parameters and return the numbers between the two parameters, etc.

There were a few SQL questions and such as well.

  • A basic entity diagram
  • A select query or two

The technical interviewer did not seem very strong with SQL...

Nothing too terribly complicated though.

Was this helpful?
