Process

The recruiter found me on LinkedIn, and she is hiring for the Technology Strategy team in the Atlanta office. We met for a coffee chat, and it was the first-round interview. She was super nice during the entire recruiting process. Because I didn’t apply through their website, it was hard to determine which role I was interviewing for: Consultant or Solution Architect.

The second round was on-site interviews for two hours. I was meeting with one Solution Principal and one Solution Architect. Questions were around my resume, why I wanted to change jobs, why Slalom, and some technical questions (What are the trends and patterns in this integration industry? What is an active/active system and disaster recovery? What software platforms do you use? Any coding experience?).

The third round was a 1.5-hour presentation deliverable interview. I was meeting with one Solution Principal and one Consultant. I think I did pretty well for this round while talking about a project I recently worked on as a PM. However, they rejected me after this interview, which was completely unexpected.

The recruiter called me and provided feedback. It seems there was not a match with their team because they are looking for someone with specific technical skill sets. My technical experience doesn’t fit their current project needs. They consider my background as a Technical PM as well, but they don’t have openings at this moment.

Other feedback is very weird: my presentation sounded too well-prepared and rehearsed too much. What’s wrong with being well-prepared? I was the PM for this project since the beginning of the year, so I am very familiar with the details related to this presentation.

Anyways, here are some tips for folks applying for this Technology Strategy team:

  • It’s a very technical role, so it’s better you have very broad technical skill sets.
  • PM is preferred but not very important for this role.
  • Very interesting business model: consultants are working Monday to Thursday/Friday on the client side, and there is a happy hour in the office on Friday. People seem very nice here, with good culture, but I don’t see much diversity in the Technology Strategy team so far.
