Pros
  • Working with a very small team leads to opportunities to diversify.
  • The small team is extremely talented.
  • The team does not nickel & dime you on paid soda.
  • Engineering turnover seemed rather high (probably due to the location).
  • A nice model of leadership divorces your task-giver from your career-manager.
Cons

Many senior co-workers are inaccessible.

Coders need to be generalists; the low headcount does not allow for specialization (with a few exceptions).

The small engineering headcount has led to a culture where you are responsible for a section of code versus more of a guardian (like in the Bungie model). This can feel like a ball and chain.

Visibility on the project direction was very limited for such a small team.

Crunch is real.

Advice to Management

Keep focused on recruiting and retaining top talent. Increase project visibility for peons.
