Process

Applied online. Received a link to a multiple-choice quiz about general CS and Python. Got a call with one of the co-founders. Easy questions (Linked list class, how to reverse a linked list) and the meaning of geometric laws. I asked if the job was still available, as it was not on their website anymore. He told me that they were hesitating between doubling an MLE position, as it was more aligned with my background, or the SWE I was interviewing for. Told him I'm okay with both but to let me know, as it is not the same preparation. Received an email to schedule a SWE interview. Seems the choice was made by them.

First call, quite an easy coding exercise and lots of ML questions. As it was an ML/SWE position, I was surprised and told it to the interviewer. They never mentioned that it was not a SWE position.

Made it to the next stage: a 5-hour interview back-to-back. The team is located in CA; I live in Paris, meaning interviews from 7 pm to 11 pm. OK. Asked for more information about the different rounds; got no answer. OK.

Relatively classic: System design, a classic coding exercise, and then a 1-hour-long ML interview. Weird for a SWE position, and I obviously did not prepare for that, as they told me it was a SWE position.

Received a call from their "bright" technical recruiter because they wanted to schedule yet another round. I asked, "What for? Don't you have enough data points to take a decision?" "Well, we found you to be a bit weak in ML for an MLE position, so we want to move you into a SWE position." "You mean the one I was told I was interviewing for?"

Anyway, biggest waste of time. 8 hours of interview, and these clowns can't even tell you what you are interviewing for. Absolutely unprofessional.
