Full Stack Developer Interview Experience - Hawthorne, California

Process

The interview process involved several stages:

  • A technical phone screen with the recruiter, who asked basic questions about Python.
  • A one-hour technical phone screen discussing my background, Python, JavaScript, systems architecture, databases, and more.
  • A five-hour coding challenge with a SpaceX employee, where I designed a REST API for a sample web application in Python.
  • An on-site interview, which began with a one-hour presentation on the sample web application and included five one-on-one interviews with team members.

While I thought the interview process went quite well, I was ultimately turned down. The feedback I received from the recruiter did not align with my experience throughout the process. It didn't work out – such is life – but the feedback and the significant time investment required were definitely disappointing.

Questions

Design a REST API that can handle listings and reviews for "bed and breakfast" outposts on Mars without any REST framework helpers (i.e. Flask-RESTful, et al.).

Given a road, railroad track, and two gates, design a fault-tolerant system to ensure the gates lower appropriately for oncoming trains and fail safely.

Design a link-sharing clone (think Bitly), and describe coding choices and systems architecture.
