Two phone interviews were conducted:
Each interview lasted about 45 minutes.
Following the phone screenings, the on-site interview process commenced. I was flown down to Los Angeles and provided with accommodations in an excellent suite in Redondo Beach. The interviews were scheduled for one morning at the Hawthorne headquarters, starting at 9 am. The on-site interview consisted of two segments: a presentation and several one-on-one sessions.
I delivered a fifteen-minute slideshow and presentation about a project I had worked on for school. This was presented to four engineers and a hiring manager. Following the presentation, I fielded questions regarding various aspects of the project. These questions included inquiries about alternative approaches under different constraints and the mathematical principles behind my completed work. This segment lasted approximately half an hour and also touched upon some of my previous internship experiences.
After the presentation and questioning, I was directed to wait in a separate conference room while the interviewers deliberated. At this point, I felt quite nervous, as some applicants are dismissed at this stage. However, after about ten minutes, one of the engineers entered the room and assured me that things were progressing well.
He, along with approximately three other individuals, took turns interviewing me one-on-one for about 25 minutes each. During these sessions, I both asked and answered a wide range of questions, spanning topics from thermodynamics concepts and general team dynamics to complex consulting-style problems.
Finally, around noon, I had lunch with a few members of the team before departing. Two and a half weeks later, I received an offer from the hiring manager.
