Someone I knew at the company was able to push my resume to the right people. A few weeks later, I received an email to set up an initial phone screening with the recruiter.
After demonstrating my interest and competence, she then set up a technical phone interview with the structures manager. This interview was moderately difficult, as it brought up a lot of courses I had taken in the past, focusing on Strengths of Materials, Statics, and FEM.
After the interview, I got an email that night stating they wanted to fly me out to Los Angeles for an onsite interview. They covered all travel expenses, including flight, hotel, rental car, $40 per day for food, and mileage to the airport.
When I arrived at their facility, the recruiter met me and gave me a tour of the entire facility, which was amazing. Afterward, I led a half-hour presentation about a technical project I had completed. The presentation was in front of about 5-6 engineers and my recruiter.
This presentation could have been from school or prior work experience. The point was to demonstrate how you approach problem-solving, what your capabilities are as an engineer, and if you're a good fit for the team.
At the conclusion of the presentation, you leave the room, and they briefly deliberate whether or not to continue to the one-on-one interviews.
I personally did not make it past the presentation. They felt I wasn't a good fit, needed more experience, and needed to explain some of the things in my presentation better.
I wasn't too disappointed because I did not like LA at all. Your opinion of the city may differ.
