Pros

Competitive compensation, or at least it used to be.

Most non-staff engineers I met are great engineers that I can look up to and learn from.

Cons

Unaccountable staff engineers swoop in with lots of opinions to derail your project, which takes a lot of time and energy to fend off.

Tracks PR count and uses that to justify performance ratings.

Only end results of your own project delivered on time matters, leading to high tech debt and toxic relationships between teams that share a code base.
