The process was long, taking almost two months. Some parts were good, while others were frustrating.
I applied online, and HR scheduled an interview. However, they failed to call me twice after setting up a time. In my opinion, this is unprofessional. They offered weak excuses about time zones.
Finally, I completed a routine phone screen, followed by an at-home exercise using Tableau. This exercise tested simple statistics and BI basics, providing an opportunity to use Tableau.
A week later, I spoke with the Prof Services hiring manager. It was a good conversation, covering my past work experience, BI skills, and some behavioral questions. It seemed they were assessing personality traits alongside the necessary analytics and big data work experience and skills.
The following week, I had two technical screens with peers. These were interesting and friendly technical discussions, including design and product questions, with a deep dive into my past work experiences. There were no gotchas, and I enjoyed them.
After that, I had to present a demo using Tableau on Webex to the team. It was challenging but fun. I spent a few days preparing, and it was a good chance to showcase my creativity and skills. Tableau lends itself well to data discovery and analysis. I thought I did well.
Sure enough, I was invited to Seattle on a beautiful summer day. I met the team and toured their office in Fremont. Everything was very nice. I thought I had the offer in the bag.
A week later, I learned there was an issue with work authorization that they wouldn't handle. Things went south from there. Having come so far, I was disappointed.
Overall, it was a good learning experience. They seem like a good company with a great product and culture. I did get the sense they were dealing with some growth issues and that their processes need to be ironed out. Some people I met seemed like they were "drinking the Kool-Aid," but most appeared to be smart and genuinely nice people.
