Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

I spoke with a recruiter for about 30 minutes and was asked to complete a skills assessment.

I completed the assessment and then was scheduled for an hour tech interview with a manager.

Questions

I was asked to solve a problem involving determining what elements of a river on a map would be present at various zoom levels. But instead of saying, "Here's the problem," I was provided a spreadsheet and asked to figure out the information I needed to solve the problem.

What seemed obvious and what I proposed was the flow of a river segment would be the cumulative flow of segments that flowed into it. It would have been trivial to solve at that point, but I was constantly confused by the interviewer's misdirection.

At the end of the time, he indicated he was looking for what I originally suggested! Then he was a bit rude in the feedback he gave, suggesting I could not be successful in the position. I suspect he may have been somewhere on the Asperger's spectrum based on the lack of empathy or tact in his feedback.

Typically, an interviewer would say something like, "Thanks for taking the time to interview with us," and end it in a cordial and professional manner.

Lastly, learning they are a .NET shop, I wouldn't have wanted to work there anyway.
