The interview process consisted of three technical rounds and one HR interview.
I was initially hesitant to apply due to a potential language barrier, but the recruiter assured me there would not be an issue.
The first round was with an engineer based in China who spoke no English. I likely passed this interview because I managed to solve the coding question.
The second round was the most enjoyable of the technical rounds. The interviewer was professional, eloquent, and helpful. The questions asked were challenging but insightful.
The third round was intended to be a system design interview with the hiring manager. Unfortunately, in addition to another communication issue, despite hiring for a frontend role, the hiring manager admitted they didn't know much about frontend development. They weren't particularly interested in my frontend experience and instead asked about topics like database caching.
I believe TikTok has interesting products and a promising future. The experience could have been better if they had been more upfront about the profile they were seeking and had a clearer understanding of the role they were hiring for.
