Process
Applied via a recruitment agency and received an interview invitation in less than a week. The first round was a video call with an engineer focusing on CS fundamentals and object-oriented programming, with some Java knowledge tested. The interviewer was very supportive and left a good impression.
The on-site interview was scheduled less than a week after the first round. It consisted of three stages:
- A classic whiteboard algorithm & data structure test.
- A web system scalability case study.
- A general cultural fitness discussion with the hiring manager and the team lead.
Overall, the interview process was efficient and well-organized. I was particularly impressed by how little time was wasted.
In the end, I chose an employer in a different industry, but I will consider TripAdvisor again in the future.

A Good Company On The Decline

Pros: The people are the biggest pro. I worked as an engineer here for a couple of years with very hard-working and fun people.
Management was open about the direction of the company and each employee's role in its future. We all put in a lot of time and effort, and we were recognized for going the extra mile. We tried to innovate and put out a solid product to satisfy our customers.
Cons: After the acquisition and the founders left, things started to change for the worse.
The communication from upper management ceased, as did the incentive to give extra effort.
New management made no attempt to get to know any of the employees. We began to more closely imitate our competitors when building new features, and it always felt like we were a few steps behind.
This is not a terrible place to work, but if you're an engineer looking to use cutting-edge technologies, host meet-ups, release open-sourced projects, contribute to a useful tech blog (like the competitors), or climb the corporate ladder -- this is probably not the place for you.

Pros: Everyone here at FlipKey is fun to work with.
I work on the engineering team, and everyone gets along.
Younger engineers are guided by the senior engineers. Everyone is knowledgeable and willing to help.
The benefits we get from being part of TripAdvisor are solid.
Great office culture.
Cons: Salaries are average and not tied to performance. There is no recognition when someone goes above and beyond. There is zero direction from management. The avenue for career advancement is narrow, if it exists at all. Lately, we just follow our competitors with no focus on innovation.
