Software Engineer/Web Developer Interview Experience - Newton, Massachusetts

Process

I was originally contacted about the position by a recruiter, who scheduled a 45-minute phone interview. This interview consisted of general questions about my experience in the industry as a developer, focused on my resume.

I had a second interview with the same person at TripAdvisor, which focused more on technical questions around JavaScript and some technical CSS questions.

From there, we scheduled an on-site interview. The on-site consisted of a series of one-on-one interviews with four members of the team I would be working with. The questions generally involved solving examples of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript problems, which were solved on a whiteboard or in a simple development environment on a computer. Each interviewer focused on a specific skill:

  • One focused on HTML.
  • Another on JavaScript.
  • One on CSS.
  • Finally, one on general computer science theory.

I also met with the original phone interviewer and an HR person who asked more personality-based and collaborative problem-solving questions in a work-type setting.

I came out of the interview satisfied with how I was able to solve their technical problems. I felt that I communicated well with the different interviewers and had good rapport with them.

A few days later, the recruiter informed me that TripAdvisor was going to decline, stating I wasn't "up to par on my Java and algorithm skills" – none of which were covered during the interview process. I asked for more details and clarification and learned that the position had been filled the day before my interview.

I was left feeling that my time had been needlessly wasted.

Questions

The interviewer drew a web layout on the whiteboard and asked me to code the HTML markup, the CSS to style it, and JavaScript to add behavior.

Given two images in HTML markup:

How would you position the lower image above the upper in CSS?

What is a JavaScript closure, and provide a code example.

How do you define an object in JavaScript? Code an example.

In jQuery, describe how the selector syntax works for the click function.
